Miracle Monday: 9 Years Clean!
Hi, my name is Janessa and I want to share my story with you. I was born & raised in Grand Rapids, MI (GO BLUE) 💙 and lived in Eden Prairie, MN for 4 years before moving to Roatan. Roatan is an island in the Caribbean
off just short of mainland Honduras. We moved full-time to the island in December 2018.
I'm the Founder of Roatan Rescue Inc, which is a non-profit profit animal rescue and Outreach organization that operates a one-acre sanctuary full of love, Animal rescue all while teaching the children, and local communities about the animals!
I started traveling at 15 and was blown away by the world God created. I finished college (1st one in my family) got a job, and bought my first home at 25. That same year, I became dependent on pain meds and ended up creating and living in pure hell for the next 7 years. I didn't know anything about the medicines I was prescribed or how they'd eventually create a life I wouldn't wish on anyone.
By the time I went to rehab, I was taking pain medication prescribed for people with stage 3 cancer. I was living two lives. Turning into a ghost of myself, my disease was destroying me. On December 1st, 2013 I walked myself into the local recovery program & told the director "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!" I cried like never before. After 7 years with my addiction, I admitted myself to rehab.
When I celebrated 5 years clean, I knew that I was ready to take on the next chapter in my life. God placed it on my heart to focus and combine my love of animals and children. I have always loved teaching kids, mentoring, etc. So when focusing on what I wanted to do, I knew combining animal rescue and teaching the children was my top priority.
On one of our trips down to the island, a little girl saw me feeding the strays along the road and asked if I would feed her dog. I said yes and she grabbed my hand and began to walk towards her home. Moments later, she stopped, looked up at me, and said “ I don't have a dog, I just wanted to go with you”.
This isn't a passion project, this is my life's purpose. Rescuing animals, caring for humans 🙏🏻❤️💪🏽 I'm a basic bitch from Michigan using my second chance to leave a world a better place 🌎 than I found it.
